Gov. Schwarzenegger proclaimed the month of February 2009 as African American History Month.
On January 20, 2009, we witnessed history as Barack Obama became the first African American President of the United States. Regardless of one’s political persuasion, it was an extremely proud and moving moment for America, and one that we will never forget.
That momentous event provides a perfect backdrop for this year’s celebration of African American History Month. In science and sports, education and entertainment, business and politics, every pursuit has moved forward thanks to the innovation and hard work of our nation’s African American citizens. California is also a beneficiary, as African Americans continue to play a vital role in our prosperity and future.
As we pause to look back on history, it is appropriate to recognize the people who have made today possible. To those brave individuals who fought – and continue to fight – against the injustice and evil of racism, I salute you. California is indebted to you for your struggles, achievements and courage.
This month, I encourage all Californians to celebrate and recognize the many fantastic contributions African Americans have made to the communities, state and world we live in.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim February 2009, as “African American History Month.”
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 3rd day of February 2009.

ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER
Governor of California
